I don’t deserve love. It’s not something that automatically belongs to me. To be loved and to love is a gift given to us from the Father freely because He is love. I often think to love others means it will not cost me anything but I am wrong. I am not love like the Father is. It will cost me my time, my money perhaps, my pride, my comfort zone, my joy, my peace, my tears and many other things to love others.
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
– 1 John 4v7
Loving others is a sacrifice I have to make each day. I also need to realize that I can not love on my own. The love I have is tainted by my own selfish human desires without any pure motive behind it. To die to myself and allow the Father to let His love flow through me is daily sacrifice I need to make each day.
“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”
– 1 John 4v9-12
To love without reserve is something scary and beautiful. Scary because it shows how vulnerable I am. Beautiful because it shows how Jesus loved me. To be vulnerable is exactly what Jesus did when He died on the cross. What Jesus did on the cross was beautiful. To live a beautiful life is to live a vulnerable life. Living this way is living to love others like Christ loved me. It’s living life fully immersed in the Father’s love.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
We love because he first loved us
– 1 John 4v16-19
